Four variables govern every route: how far a vehicle moves in a day, where the vehicle stops for the night, which stops are treated as fixed points, and what happens when a road or facility is closed. The four subsections below describe each variable and the thresholds applied to it. Thresholds are treated as defaults rather than rules; a traveler who states a preference for longer driving days or a fixed lodging budget receives a route built to those parameters instead.
Driving Stage Calculation
A driving stage is the distance between two overnight stops. The default stage is 120 to 260 miles, which equals roughly 2.5 to 4 hours of wheel time at posted limits. Transfer stages between clusters, such as Salt Lake City to West Yellowstone at 321 miles or Las Vegas to Springdale, Utah at 168 miles, are permitted up to 420 miles and are always followed by a non-driving day. Travel dates matter more than any other variable in the planning calendar: requests for June through September visits arrive between January and April, and that window accounts for 58 percent of annual order volume. Office hours are 9:00 to 17:00 Mountain Time, Monday through Friday, and correspondence is handled in the order received.
